During this economic downturn, greater expectations have been placed on community colleges by the nation's elected officials to train workers for the jobs of tomorrow, and to retrain those who have been displaced from the workforce for jobs to support their families. The national media now are helping to spread the news about the advantages of attending community colleges.

Forget the myth about community colleges supposedly offering a lower-quality education than four-year colleges and universities. Not only is that not true, but more students are finding the community college route a great cost-saving strategy as well as a high-quality path to a degree. At St. Louis Community College, students who earn their associates degree and enroll as juniors in a four-year college go on to do as well or better than students who started in the four-year college as freshmen, said Joanie Friend, enrollment manager at the college.

The inaugural group of transportation security officers taking courses through a joint program between St. Louis Community College and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) were honored at a special ceremony at Lambert St. Louis International Airport. The participants completed the three credit courses required for the TSA Certificate of Achievement. They began their studies in fall 2010. They now have earned nine hours of STLCC credit and will have the opportunity to earn an associate degree in homeland security or a related field. The National TSA Associates Program is managed by the TSA Office of Training and Workforce Engagement. The Business Technology Training (BTT) program is an accelerated 10-week certificate program offering diverse adult-learners the advanced technical and business skills necessary to differentiate yourself in today's competitive job market. 74% of the individuals that have completed the Environmental Remediation Technician six-week, 240-hour accelerated job training program have found employment utilizing the training received. The program, funded by the Brownsfields Job Training program and in partnership with St Louis University-Center for Environmental Education and Training, is designed to help unemployed and underemployed individuals living near brownfield impacted areas pursue entry level employment in environmental remediation and maintain a living wage. The program includes instruction in lead and asbestos remediation, hazardous materials handling, and worker safety, as well as firsthand views of St. Louis area remediation sites.
